How to Handle a Formal Caution Without Panicking

A formal caution (sometimes called a hygiene improvement notice) feels terrifying when it lands on the counter.

It isn’t a criminal record and it doesn’t automatically drop your rating — yet.

You usually have 14–28 days to fix the listed problems and provide evidence. Do exactly that and the caution disappears.

The businesses that succeed every time follow the same process:

1. Photograph everything the officer pointed out. 2. Fix it the same or next day. 3. Update procedures (usually digital checklists) so it can’t happen again. 4. Send dated photos + new records to the officer before the deadline.

Over 90 % of cautions issued to small independent cafés are closed without further action when owners treat them as a free consultancy visit instead of a punishment.
